C’est l’hypothèse la plus commode pour la mise en équation. Elle est assez bien vérifiée dans certains cas comme celui d’un piston se déplaçant dans un cylindre plein d’huile (d’où le schéma de l’amortisseur), ou une grande surface déplaçant de l’air, où la viscosité du fluide est sollicitée. L’amortissement est alors dit visqueux.
