French to English translations [PRO] Science - Physics / types of vacuum | | French term or phrase: vide poussé | In a text on contemporary art:
"on manipule un peu l’appareil muséal à faire le vide. Quel vide ? Grossier, moyen, poussé, ultravide pour reprendre les termes de physique."
I know nothing about physics. Any ideas? |

| | English translation:high vacuum | Explanation: Vacuums (or vacua) come in many forms: ultra high (empty space and the LHC), high (less demanding physics applications), medium, and low. The nomenclature is, of course, the wrong way round, since the less gas there is in the chamber, the "better" or "higher" the vacuum is. It's a lot less confusing just to talk about pressure, but of course scientists always use their own forms of shorthand.

Rather than "medium" , a "moderate" vacuum is usually referred to. |

Asker: Marvellous, many thanks. I'm fine with contemporary art, but physics is beyond me!
