12 mins confidence: peer agreement (net): +1 divided media
Explanation: Physics of divided media, eg granular materials inter alia. Vide Google.

The persistence of hits for "divided media" can be misleading (well, it misled me...), since these are invariably French academic sites, eg CNRS, Toulouse University, etc. What is meant here (though not easy to translate) is particulate or (in some cases) inhomogeneous media. The study of the flow of sand, for example, would come under "divided media". English-speaking physics doesn't seem to differentiate this particular branch, though "granularity" or "grainy matter" may get close.

"Granular media" is probably the best translation, which is commonly used in physics. In particular in the engineering context, this would involve the study of eg the flow of sand, flour and other finely divided solid particles. Railway ballast seems to come under this heading too.
