French to English translations [Non-PRO]

Even electronic balances need to be calibrated against known weights. I use the word "weight" here since a mass generates a force (ie the weight) only in the presence of gravity (or acceleration). The old style chemical balance was independent of gravity (g) since either side experienced the same acceleration, which therefore cancelled out. This does not apply to electronic weighing machines (which strictly, are not really "balances"), and an accurate one will observably vary from pole to equator. The purpose of all the above guff is to emphasise "mass" rather than "weight".
On the other hand, if the context is "crude", eg for weighing vegetables, then "marked weights" may be perfectly sufficient. |
