French term or phrase: battement de fréquences
"...production d'un rayonnement par battement de fréquences de deux faisceaux laser".

Is it correct to say "beating", as in "the beating of..."??

Thanks in advance!

frequency beating
Explanation:
I'm not personally familair with the term, particualrly in a context of lasers, but it does make sense.

I'd consider re-writing, though, to something like "beating togther two lasers of (slightly) differing frequencies" — the rest of your context may make it clearer whether this would be a viable somution or not; it relly all depends just how different the frequencies are, or whether they are so close, they're not really meant to be 'different' at all.

disagree  Tony M: But that would be 'fréquence de battement' / Fair enough — may well be technically true, but that's not what the source text is saying.

-> What I meant was radiation emitted at at the beat frequency. I should probably have posted as a discussion entry.

agree  chris collister: See http://www.rp-photonics.com/beat_note.html, ie "frequency beating", vide Tony

agree  chris collister: Invariably the difference frequency is used, rather than the sum, though theoretically, the sum and difference of any two sinusoids are detectable...

-> Thanks, Chris! Yes, technically of course — but here they're not specifying either anyway.

agree  Zareh Darakjian Ph.D.: It's good the way it is. // You're welcome, Tony.
