writeaway: 2:44pm May 12, 2007: you can't really translate it literally-seems it's part of a Girl Scout song: http://www.girlscouttroop102.com/2001Website/games.htm http://www.gsmusic.com/lyrics/Vol1Lyrics.html

Around the gray hearth, where the fire crackles and laughs ...
Explanation:

Autour de l'âtre gris, oû le feu clair pétille et rit ... = Around the gray hearth, where the fire crackles and laughs ...

I didn't translate "le feu clair" ... but I wouldn't write "clear fire".

Two modifications: 1. It should be "où" and not "oû";
2. Tony suggests "bright fire".
It should now read: Around the gray hearth, where the bright fire crackles and laughs ...

Thank you so much. That is exactly it.
It's bad enough to be ignorant, let alone make it public... :(

agree Tony M: It's a shame, though, to omit 'clair', what's wrong with 'bright fire'?
