French term or phrase: comédienne "gagiste"
This refers to an actress in Molière's company in the 17th C. Does this mean she was "apprenticed" to the theatre? She was very young which made me think of this possibility.
Grateful for any help in understanding the term ... failing any suggestions for a translation!
Context: "Mlle Marotte, très jeune comédienne "gagiste" de la troupe de Molière".

hired actor
Explanation:
The explanation of the word "gagiste" seems to imply "someone for hire" -- see: http://www.cocoledico.com/dictionnaire/gagiste,138305.xhtml

And here is a passage where "gagiste" is translated as "hired actors":http://en.wikisource.org/wiki/The_End_of_Books?match=fr

"« Les auteurs privés du sentiment des harmonies de la voix et des flexions nécessaires à une belle diction emprunteront le secours de gagistes, acteurs ou chanteurs pour emmagasiner leur œuvre sur les complaisants cylindres. "
"Authors who are not sensitive to vocal harmonies, or who lack the flexibility of voice necessary to a fine utterance, will avail themselves of the services of hired actors or singers to warehouse their work in the accommodating cylinder. "
