A mystery/detective sstory where God's words run from...
Explanation:
The novel which is talked about is 'La Promesse de l'Ange'. I gather it's a bit similar to Saramago's 'The History of the Siege of Lisbon' in that it explores the past and present through their similarities. I don't think 'treasure hunt' or anything like that is appropriate as the story focusses on an archeologist who is fascinated by appearances from a decapitated monk and decides to, somehow, investigate the Mont-Saint-Michel. It is also a bit similar to detective and mystery novels in that it is really about what happened to the monk.

a game of intellect where divine words elude us

Explanation:
This could possibly be turned around as:

"An game of intellect which pursues divine words."

or maybe even :

"A cluedo type game chasing divine words."

I have used the word "elude" in reference to the thriller/cluedo type aspect suggested here.

neutral  Helen Shiner: This formulation makes it sound as if God's word is in flight, running away from something.//I don't believe running has got anything to do with it. Threading through or interwoven is more appropriate.

-> It could also 'run in the background'. Is it running then?

neutral  cc in nyc: Oh, my, I agree with Helen about this; it wounds odd –IMO "interwoven" is a very good suggestion ;-)

Maybe just 'a paper chase on the trail of'...

A paper chase following/tracing/on the trail of the word of the Divine from Ancient Rome via the Middle Ages to the present day. As an art historian, I have always felt that the research I undertake is a form of treasure hunt. I see this phrase in that same light.

  -> Thanks, SafeTex

neutral  Kirsten Bodart: I don't think the point of 'la parole divine' is that it is sought for, or that is not the point of the mystery, but it is in the background./'Jeu de piste' refers to the murder mystery, not 'la parole divine', see summary.
1 day20 hrs
-> Of course it is sought for - why undertake a jeu de piste if not? The word of God/the Divine is interwoven through the game.//The 'où court' makes it quite plain that they are intertwined. It may be a murder mystery, but that is an over-translation here.
