French term or phrase: structuré
I am translating a social report describing a family that is applying for approval to adopt. This section is talking about the children they already have.
The sentence says about one of them "Il est, d'après ses parents, gentil, très structuré et très cartésien."

In this context would 'structuré' mean 'methodical' or a 'methodical thinker'? Something like that?

It would be great to have answers from people with a psychology background.
Thanks for your help!

Thanks to everyone who has got stuck in with this passionate debate (... somewhat amusing to an outside observer). I think I am convinced by "Dr" Jones references and point of view. But the discussions and suggestions were all very helpful and got me thinking. Thanks to everyone.

disagree  xxx::::::::::: not focused, structured means (depending on the theory) that thought processes have been succesfully initiated in the child - this is a professional 'translating' the mother's remarks
3 mins
-> technically maybe but how often have you heard a parent describe a child as "structured" ? Highly unlikely

agree  Emma Paulay: I think this is a good alternative to 'methodical'.

Notes to answerer
Asker: piece of friendly advice. Go easy on the exclamation marks. It doesn't make you sound more authoritative. Thanks for your research and references though. Very helpful.

neutral  Emma Paulay: I don't think this is something a parent would say about a child//The context says "d'après ses parents" which, to me, means that this is something the boy's parents have said about him.//Since when is 'gentil' psy language?

-> but these are professionals transposing what the mother has said into psy language !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

neutral  polyglot45: agree with Emma - it is the parents' description, not the professional's
16 mins
-> no it's not, 'd'après ses parents' ne veut absolument pas dire 'litéralement' d'après eux

agree  Helen Shiner: I quite take your point and think you are absolutely right here./It is sometimes quite a struggle, isn't it? This is a social report not a verbatim account of what the parents said.
28 mins
-> at last someone understands what I'm getting at - thanks phew :)!!

neutral  Jessica Agullo: an odd choice of words to describe a child given that the social worker is describing parents' description of their child

well mannered

Explanation:
aa peer suggests that fastidious has negative implications (I was not aware), in which case I prefer well mannered to describe a child.

Example sentence(s):
  • Our child is well mannered and reasonable by nature

fastidious

Explanation:
Same as methodical perhaps, but sounds more like a character trait than a thought process.
I imagine that parents describing a child in this context are more likely to be commenting on the behaviour or demeanor of the child.
Tidy, even tempered, well behaved are also possibilities.

I was unaware of the negative implication - so fastidious leans toward OCD?

Asker: Thanks for your suggestion. It may be a difference between Brit and US perception, but is 'fastidious' not a little bit of a negative trait? I think in this context, 'structuré' is meant to be a positive character trait. Let me know your thoughts...

well-balanced

Explanation:
Hello,

If a child is "bien structuré", it means that he is well-balanced.

A happy, well-balanced child.

very common word in child psychology

I hope this helps.

Notes to answerer
Asker: Thanks for the suggestion. The expression 'sounds good' in English. I am slightly less confident of how close the meaning is to the meaning of the French expression. Thanks for your contribution, though.

agree  ArabellaCE: Think this is the words most EN parents would use to describe their children - very common in England in general family/educational context ( I have school age kids in England)

-> Thanks, Arabella! You are exactly right. This is also how psychologists refer to "un enfant bien structuré" in English.

organized

Explanation:
Assuming reporting of what the parents said, and perhaps by a social worker rather than a psychologist. It might help to know how old this particular child is--"organized" would be strange for a 2-year-old, but not a 12-year-old.
