French term or phrase: errance
I get an idea of aimlessness, but can`t put my finger and the term. Thanks for your help!

agree  Tony M: Not 'err / erring' — those don't normally have this meaning any more in current EN. In this specific context, I'd say something like 'merely wandering about'

agree  whither has fle: I agree Tony, but how about wandering around aimlessly?

neutral  Tony M: I think that refers more to a perceived state of mind, whereas they seem to be likening this to an actual physical (non) activity...

-> a failure to be active as a consequence of lack of initiative or ambition wordnetweb.princeton.edu/perl/webwn

neutral  whither has fle: Hi, I might be wrong, but "shiftlessness" seems negative/dishonest to me and not a term in Psych. to describe someone a bit lost, aimless.
1 hr
-> This is a fairly clinical definition: a failure to be active as a consequence of lack of initiative or ambition wordnetweb.princeton.edu/perl/webwn

Explanation:
a bit old-fashioned, in US EN, but conveys the meaning IMO

purposeless

Explanation:
"Purposeless" means given to drifting, an indecisive, irresolute character and I don't think it carries any pejorative overtones.
