Nous sommes en présence d'un couple "différencié" mais il semble que chacun ait besoin de reconnaissance et il apparaît évident que ce projet s'inscrit aussi du côté de la renarcissisation qu'il contient.

with distinct personalities; with clearly defined boundaries
Explanation:
I believe they are referring to partners with distinct personalities, as opposed to the early phase of "infatuation" where the boundaries in a couple have not yet been established...there might be a specialized term that fits this context

distinguished

Explanation:
In this context we seem to be dealing with a couple that has been distinguished (or short listed?) for the consideration of the request for adoption.

differentiated

Explanation:
I think this means that they don't lose their identities in one another but keep separate identities and use one another to reflect a positive image that "fills in the gaps" and insecurities about themselves.

I studied this kind of psychology under Julia Kristéva at Paris VII, and I\'m all too familiar with the concepts. She and Lacan develop Freud\'s idea of Narcissm by claiming that using other\'s as a mirror is an essential element of the healthy personality. This use of a mirror requires duality, i.e. differentation. This school of analysis assimilates mystical union with the universe with schizophrenia and loss of personality. Similarly, in an \"unhealthy\" relationship the lovers lose their personalities and merge completely, whereas in a healthy relationship they mirror one another in a complementary fashion.

each member of the couple is an autonomous individual

Explanation:
Technically, I don't know if William will agree with the term, but autonomy is THE term for me (although I admit that my references are more Dr. Susan Forward than University of Paris) :)
