French term or phrase: bouffées anxieuses
These terms come from Roy, et al. (1988). "Pregnancies after a perinatal death: the working out of an index for psychological risk." They describe the psychological troubles faced by women who are pregnant after having lost a child in a previous pregnancy. The study was published by researchers in Montpellier, France.

This article gives a description of a "bouffée anxieuse" from which it is clear it is a temporary state. I think we would just say "anxiety attack".

The question is, is this bouffée as serious as an attaque :

fits of anxiety

Explanation:
1) The definition of "bouffées" is fits or outbursts.
2) A "fit" is defined as "a sudden uncontrollable attack."

Therefore, I would translate the term " bouffées anxieuses" as "fits of anxiety."

There are many examples online using this expression.

My Larousse's Dictionary specifically defines "bouffées" as fit or outburst (in a medical context).

Example sentence(s):
  • Gradually I was able to transfer my newfound awareness from the meditation cushion to everyday life. I began experiencing calm and clarity, far fewer bouts of depression or fits of anxiety.
  • At times these fits of anxiety can mislead patients and even doctors into thinking that the person is suffering from mood swings or some kind of an emotional problem.

disagree  Joyce A: Hello Drmanu. The word "bout" is often used with illnesses, but it means "a period of illness." So, it's about "time" as in: a bout of fever, a bout of malaria, a bout of depression, etc.
