Does this mean to randomly draw envelopes? So "ordre 1" would be the first envelope picked? This is about a psychology experiment. Thanks, Karen

Yes. In experiments it is common to "draw lots" to determine the order of subjects. The blind envelope method is one of the most common.

The same expression - \"tirer l\'ordre\" would be used when drawing lots to see who starts first in a game, for example. Try googling the expression and I\'m sure you\'ll find plenty of examples of its use in both situations (scientific and gaming)...

TYPO: TRIER......because then it says to start with No. 1...

1) SORT in order TRIER
2) Then open Envelope ONE
3) Remove the twelve cards
4) Put them on the table
5) SHUFFLE THEM [melangez les] or mix them up
6) then turn up the ones of the same color

those are the steps of these directions!!

They would NOT say to mix them up and then start with No. 1. If you are starting with NUMBER ONEm, it must be TRIER...Once they are sorted, you start with ONE, remove the CARDS and SHUFFLE OR MIX UP the CARDS INSIDE THE ENVELOPE...

That\'s it. I am not going to argue this. I know I am right in this case because of the logic of the sentences and my knowledge of French. Good luck!!

Just remember, it makes no sense to shuffle and then Start with one!!

OK, Julia is right. maybe...DEPENDS on the meaning of ORDRE. Does it mean AN ORDER the person must comply with? or does it mean the PICK...in my opinion, there is NO WAY TO TELL...ORDRE 1 could be a set of instructions for all I know...OR it could be RANDOMLY PICKED ENVELOPE No. 1......
