French to English translations [PRO]
Religion / Islam
French term or phrase: solder la religion
In an interview with a woman of Algerian parents who was born and brought up in France. She's talking about Muslims and Islam and explaining the difference (in her opinion) between moderate and non-moderate Muslims. I'm afraid I can't post more context here as her words may be a bit controversial. if you think you can help out, I would be willing to e-mail the entire paragraph to you:

"On **solde** la religion maintenant? Ou on est musulman, ou on ne l’est pas."

I have no idea what "solder" could mean in this sentence. Thanks for any hints you can give!

English translation:solder = sell off cheap
Explanation:
as in les soldes" (the sales)

what she means is - you want to offer discount religion now - no way, you're either Muslim or you' re not - in other words - you suggesting a watered down version of Islam now - sorry it's all or nothing

in the end, the way you translate it will depend also on what was said before since this is clearly a response

you think one can be a part-time Muslim, a diluted version... but again the tone will depend on the rest

-> could be - a lot depends on the register of the text in general and that we cannot know

agree  ericjanpost: OR selling religion short, not cheap, but without bothering to assign its true value. Betraying is the sense given. I'm consciously editorializing...

cheapen religion

Explanation:
She may be making the point that religion is now nothing but a "commodity" that is bought and sold. In other words, people use it to demand things and don't really take it seriously. She may think it is only used to gain something else and not for its own merits.
