I'm not sure it has to be a typo - literally I think it would mean 'let us not compare its shape to that of the ...' which makes sense in EN even if it sounds a bit cumbersome.
I wonder if it's a spelling mistake and should actually say "ne rapprochant pas de..." which would make more sense and fit in with savtrad's suggestion
