I have just found a nice link that makes a clear distinction between "field of research" (i.e. what is being researched) and "avenue of research" (i.e. how that research is being approached):

Asker: Thank you for your generous help. I can see that "lines of research" and "avenues of research" are current terms, although a great many of the references I came across were from non-English speaking universities. I thought "theme" or "focus" was more appropriate in my (NA) context.
