French term or phrase: une synthèse

literature review
Explanation:
See:

Since it presents original experimental results, I cannot call the entire paper a "literature review." However, I suppose it could be reasonable to call the section that provides (extensive?) discussion/comparison of previous papers/results a "literature review."

It is standard practice to sandwich presentation of original experimental results between an introductory section that includes some very brief literature review and a discussion section that includes comparison with results published by other researchers.... even if the original research presented is a bit "outside the box." So only if the paper goes into a good deal of depth and is somewhat exhaustive in dealing with the body of relevant work that has already been published would I call the section a "literature review."

On the other hand, if the paper provides no more than the usual/appropriate/necessary situating of the original research within the existing body of existing knowledge, then it does not fit my idea of a "literature review"... but in that case you could perhaps translate synthèse bibliographique by "a brief review of literature" or something of the sort.

A literature review is a body of text that aims to review the critical points of current knowledge including substantive findings as well as theoretical and methodological contributions to a particular topic. Literature reviews are secondary sources, and as such, do not report any new or original experimental work.

Most often associated with academic-oriented literature, such as theses, a literature review usually precedes a research proposal and results section. Its ultimate goal is to bring the reader up to date with current literature on a topic and forms the basis for another goal, such as future research that may be needed in the area.

document analysis

Explanation:
It is an exercise in identifying and analysing the ideas set out in several documents on one topic. Frequently given in French higher education institutions.

agree  wsetters: agree. I hate that excercise... I disagree though that it is necessarily multiple documents, though - certainly at the ESIT these are written based on a single text...

-> Thanks. Yes, it can be different sorts of exercise, and not one I would set. I do think though that the client should be consulted in this case, as it's not at all obvious from the context.

Dialectic synthesis

Explanation:

--------------------------------------------------

The aim of the dialectical method is resolution of the disagreement through rational discussion,[6][7] and ultimately the search for truth. One way to proceed — the Socratic method — is to show that a given hypothesis (with other admissions) leads to a contradiction; thus, forcing the withdrawal of the hypothesis as a candidate for truth (see also reductio ad absurdum). Another way of trying to resolve a disagreement is by denying some presupposition of both the contending thesis and antithesis; thereby moving to a third (syn)thesis or "sublation".

Example sentence(s):
  • Hegel proposed a dialectic synthesis process in thinking. In simplistic terms it is the synthesizing of opposing viewpoints to find their commonalities.

disagree  Sandra Mouton: From the context, my understanding is the source text is advice to school students on the method to be used in this exercise. Not scientists reviewing what their peers have said on the subject.

-> Yes, my understanding was the same; students, not scientists. My example was of a much higher caliber, but the basic idea is the same. I'm not sure that an equivalent in English exists at the high school level.

research review paper

Explanation:
A research review paper is an academic type which seems to fit your description of a stand alone paper.

Here are some examples from the internet:

"My first attempt at a psychological research review paper, this report follows basic APA style, with some exceptions. It centers on the mediators that exist between family environment and eating disorders, and suggests a new model to be tested by researchers."

Requirements of the M.A. program

We offer two options leading to the M.A. degree: the Thesis option and the Research Review Paper option. The Thesis option involves twelve course credits and a research based Thesis. Students choosing the research review option are required to complete eighteen course credits and write a major paper based on a critical review of a body of literature. All students are required to participate in a minimum of twelve weekly workshops.

What is a Literature Review?
A review of the literature is:

•It is literally that: a "re" view or "look again" at what has already been written about the topic. It is not a literary review, which usually is a review of a literary work such as a play, novel, book of poems or a review that has some artistic merit.
•A compilation of the research that has been published on a topic by recognized scholars and researchers.
•Defined by a guiding concept (e.g., your research objective, the problem or issue you are discussing or your argumentative thesis). It is not just a descriptive list of the material available, or a set of summaries.
•Provides background for the problem the students are attacking or put the problem into historical perspective and, at times, show how others handled similar problems in the past.
In writing the literature review, your purpose is:

•To convey to your reader what knowledge and ideas have been established on a topic.
•What their strengths and weaknesses might be.
As a piece of writing a literature review:

•Is most often it is part of the introduction to an essay, research report, or thesis.
•Occasionally it will be a complete piece in and of itself.
