Science - Science (general) / Colours
French term or phrase: triangle de désaturation
CONTEXT:

"Un axe vertical noir blanc, appelé échelle des gris, représente les tons neutres. Toute droite perpendiculaire à cet axe présente des tons isophanes (de même clarté). Toute droite parallèle à cet axe vertical noir blanc affiche des tons isosaturés (d'égale saturation). Les échantillons de laine nouvellement codés sont présentés sur chaque page de tonalité en un triangle de désaturation où chaque ton pur de 100% de chroma est placé au niveau du gris d'égale luminosité."

No Google hits whatsoever for "desaturation triangle". What can it be? TIA.

neutral  Nikki Scott-Despaigne: I have not found any trace of the existence of a DEsaturation trianlge. It looks very much like a typo or an invented term! If you have references then I'd be happy to stand corrected. // Desaturation exists, but I find nothing on "desaturation triangle".

-> As above the Routledge Technical, and the Shorter Oxford Dictionaries both show the word Desaturation

agree  Marian Vieyra: desaturation (diːˌsætʃəˈreɪʃən) — n physics the addition of white light to a pure colour to produce a paler less saturated colour

agree  Tony M: I think it is probably an invented term, but a perfectly valid and comprehensible one

disagree  Tony M: It should be 'chromaticity', but in any case, I'm afraid this term is (properly, at any rate!) used to refer to something very specific, not quite the same as is being described here.

Explanation:
my bet is that this is a typo, however I have not translated your entire text, but you should be able to judge from the general context

neutral  Tony M: I don't think for a moment that it's a typo, it's just that they seem to have a special way of looking at it; note that it starts from 100% saturation, and so must go down from there, hence why 'desaturation' is logical (if not widespread!)

-> OK! hadn't really looked at that. So "desaturation triangle", particularly if "saturation triangle" exists.

agree  Nikki Scott-Despaigne: I would tend to agree with Liz here. Cf. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HSL_and_HSV at "basic Principles", ref decrease in saturation. Check with client whether a typo "triangle DE saturation", a neologism ("désaturation") or if they mean decrease in sat°.
