French term or phrase: pied de talus
Nothing to do with continental shelves, banks or anything geological!

Here, the "oeuvres mortes" (topsides) are defined as the part above the boot-topping up to the exterior deck on surface vessels, and up to the "pied de talus" on submarines.

A 2009 query by Jessjess suggests that "pied de panneau" might be a synonymous term.

Any ideas?

Many thanks.
