The sentence that I am having a hard time with:

"La yole ronde fut créée dans les années 40, par un charpentier du François en s'inspirant à la fois du gommier et de la yole européenne."

This is about the Caribbean boat tradition.

I'm translating "yole ronde" as "yole boat", but have no idea what "gommier" could be.
