Yole and yawl are very common boat names in FR and EN respectively and apply to a variety of shapes, sizes and rigs. You only have to look at yole http://www.virusboats-cyprus.com/assets/images/Custom_Yole.j... and yole http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/3/31/Yol... to see what I mean. I am sure the "yole europeenne" of your text is referring to the latter example, a pilot gig.

You can't translate "Yole européenne" as "European yole" though. And yawl is a mistake - that's chaloupe in French.

I saw yole on lots of sites, including one having to do with what I'm translating, so I think I will leave it as "yole" in my text to be in keeping with the terms used by the tourism authority I'm working for. I also saw "yawl", which I thought was interesting, but decided to stick to "yole".

Yole is the French for skiff.
