Unfortunately it does not seem "equality" and "equal opportunities" have the same meaning, as someone has already pointed out. ("de facto" equality and "de jure" EO...). Anyhow thank you for the comment about diversity, I think I will definitely stick to "gender equality in jobs and occupations."

If you are not satisfied with "gender equality", you could resort to a periphrasis using something like "equal opportunities for men and women in occupations and jobs".

To answer your not not on my proposition, in my view "gender diversity" calls forth the idea of gays, lesbians, bisexuality, etc., which is to be excluded in your context. The use of "mix" wouldn't elude the problem, and I've never seen it in such context

Thank you everyone. I actually needed to make sure that when I say "mixité" I just refer to gender and not other types of differences. I need to use the word in a highly political context where there should be no confusion with say race age. The French Ministry for Equal Opportunities between women and men seems to use it with reference to gender only. Thank you everyone.

Aude, vous avez peut-être raison. Il faut effectivement plus de contexte pour savoir qui a raison ici. Je me demande ce qui avait fait penser le demandeur/la demanderesse qu'il s'agissait uniquement de mixité des genres.

@ Matthew: Thks, I agree with you indeed; my idea is that, since we are not certain/not convinced that mixité pro. exclusively refers to gender, then I would refrain from using that word in the translation.

In school settings, "mixité" refers to having students of both genders. I get Aude's point, but I'm not fully convinced that we are talking about "diversity" in all ways (race, gender, age, etc).

Asker: Actually my question comes from the fact that I am a gender expert working for the EC DG Employment (the website you are referring to). I think that the most appropriate translation would be "gender diversity" because equality does have a wider meaning. Mixité professionnelle in a gender context just means that we are trying to make sure that there are more women/men in non-traditional occupations (e.g. men in child care or women as welders). That may imply equality but not necessarily. BUT for political reasons the EC does not want to use the term "gender diversity in occupations", as it may recall other differences such as race etc. , which I do not agree with, as we are qualifying it with "gender". I need to find a punch line and I wonder whether I could use the word "mix" instead of "diversity" . What do you think?
