This is from a French academic article on privacy concerns. (The categories available don't really seem to fit.)

Le plan expérimental
Le design proposé dans le cadre de cette expérience est un plan factoriel complet de type 2 x 2 x 2 (soit 8 cas possibles au total) ***en inter-sujet*** (chaque répondant n’est confronté qu’à un seul des 8 cas possibles). Les trois facteurs manipulés [Mentions RVP ; Familiarité et Quantité], le sont donc chacun à deux niveaux.

Here's what I have so far : The design proposed in the context of this experiment is a complete 2 x 2 x 2 factorial plan ( eight cases possible in all) ...
I'd appreciate help understanding the meaning of "en inter-sujet" more exactly, and a stab at a translation and how to fit it into my sentence! Unfortunately, I don't think this is a case of "la nuit porte conseil"...

on an inter-subject basis

Explanation:
'inter-subject' means that the results for one subject (person doing the test) are compared with results for other subjects.

There are also 'intra-subject' tests, where a subject's results are compared with other results for the same subject, taken at different times or under different conditions.

Explanation:
Now that mediamatrix has clarified the meaning (I wouldn't have known!) we can think about the best form of English to represent this idea. I don't think we have a neat term like "inter-sujet" - certainly there is no regular phrase "inter-subject", tho it could be created. I think it needs to be made clear that what is between subjects is a comparison not a relationship. Otherwise as an English speaker I would interpret "inter-subject" as meaning "involving relations between different subjects", and might even think the whole phrase meant "inter-disciplinary".
