French to English translations [PRO] Social Sciences - Social Science, Sociology, Ethics, etc. | | French term or phrase: célibat géographique | This term occurs as a reference to individuals, who because of displacement for employment reason, are "geographically single", and therefore of more vulnerable to HIV.
It also appears to be a general term. Is there an equivalent expression in English? |

Re all the 'neutrals' below:
There is no fundamental difference between the French concept of célibat and the English concept of celibacy. Both refer to being morally/ethically obliged to refrain from intercourse - regardless of whether the obligaction derives from religious vows or marriage vows.
The choice of célibat in French is intended to convey the moral/ethical dilema that faces (or at least should face) people (not just men, of course...) who are geograhically separated from their spouse and who may be tempted despite that obligation not only to have sex but also to have it in unsafe circumstances which they would not encounter in the domestic environment.
IMHO this is an important nuance in the choice of wording in the source text which is not adequately expressed by 'single' in English.

Asker: Maybe your cited sources are mistranslations? In any case, thanks for your help.
Asker: I've seen it translated this way, but 'celibate' in English just doesn't work for me. But thanks.
