The following is from a magazine article about polo and horseriding in France.

"Sur 14 hectares, avec 2 terrains, une carrière et une piste d’entraînement, le haras peut accueillir jusqu’à 180 chevaux".

I've been unable to find a satisfactory translation for 'carrière'. GDT gives 'open school' as an equestrian term, but I'm not quite convinced by that. Any other suggestions, or explanations of what exactly a 'carrière' is in this context?

Explanation:
The word means "a quarry". All that I can think about, in this context, is that they are saying that the school has all those facilities, including a sandpit for training. Not being heavily involved in equestrianism I don't know if one would have a sandpit for training pruposes?

writeaway: outdoor arena/ring (in dico). agree/know that paddock is wrong but seems to be an outodoor riding arena. so ring isn't that far off, in my (perhaps too?) casual approach.

Rachel Davenport: Paddock is either where you let horses out on their own for a run round or where you 'warm up' before a competition. Outdoor arena is also possible but not ring.

-> Yes, but judging from the photos posted on various stables' websites, it seems that the term may also refer to a paddock. In my experience "ring" (outdoor, show, warm-up) is the most commonly used. For me arena usually refers to an indoor facility.
