French term or phrase: autonomie
Still on the subject of diving safety:

En théorie et parce qu’il délivre un mélange à PpO2 variable, le recycleur trimix électronique optimise parfaitement la plongée. Vu comme cela, ce type d’appareil constitue même une sorte d’arme absolue.
Paradoxalement, le revers de la médaille réside dans les incroyables performances de ces appareils. Leur **autonomie** est telle que le plongeur rentre dans des procédures de décompression pas toujours maîtrisées.

Not sure how to translate "autonomie" in this context; it is given as "autonomy" in the glossaries in a diving sense, but I'd appreciate confirmation as I can't find much evidence of this on English sites on Google, only translated sites.

Many thanks again!

range/endurance - however, read on....
Explanation:
it means that they last so long that divers spend far too much time underwater

If it were a car, you would talk about mpg - how long you can go without needing to fill up the tank

The downside is their performance: they allow the diver to remain under water for so long that......

agree  Dr Sue Levy: they enable such long dive durations that... in any case "autonomy" is a faux-ami here

agree  Marc Glinert: I quite like range here CMJ - I just wonder whether endurance suggests more the diver himself rather than the equipment he is using//right. with you all the way then on this one CMJ (surely you remember Air Supply?!)

air supply

Explanation:
How about "air supply", in the same way that the "autonomie" of a laptop is the "battery supply"?

The suggestion below, or: "the air supply lasts so long that...".

It's one of those typical Romance words that you shouldn't try and find an exact translation for but rather reword the sentence as we would say it in English.

agree  writeaway: well, ok then for air supply but for laptop, isn't how long the battery will run/last ?

-> Yes, that's how I also understood it. Therefore "the air supply is so great that..."

neutral  Marc Glinert: Timothy - this isn't one of those things where you're trying to get 80s bands up on this site, is it? We are clearly not of the same generation... www.airsupply-online.com

-> Clearly not! I was born in 1981, so 80s bands are before my time really. I've just read your profile. Do you just do Kudoz for the fun then? Or do you translate as part of your full-time job?
