French term or phrase: sec profond
Another diving article!

I'm not sure I quite understand how water can be sec.... but this appears to be a specialist diving term. Does anyone know what the appropriate English translation is?

"Penny a basculé une dernière fois dans les eaux bleues d'un **sec profond** derrière Porquerolles...."

Many thanks

Explanation:
Is this not possibly an attribute of time rather than the water?

Another possibility might be "straight down" indicating the way in which she entered the water.

Now that I understand that Porquerolles is a place and not a person, how about "a sudden drop off". This is a term commonly used to describe a shore line whose shallow water suddenly turns very deep.

agree  Ingeborg Gowans: could be: seconde abbreviated, that makes sense!

neutral  Tony M: Unlikely, for your first suggestion, since in FR that would be 'UNE seconde profondE' // 2nd suggestion: That was my first thought too, but all in all, I think Ciliegina's probably got the right idea. // 'drop off' seems to me along the right lines

-> I thought of this too, but abbreviations often take on a life of their own. By the way, have you seen my second and third entries?

It's a bit of a long shot but...

Explanation:
I wonder if it could be 'the dry depths behind the Porquerolles? I found this sentence in a description of how you would feel after doing some deep-sea diving:
Quand vous aurez goûté au confort d’être sec après la plongée, vous ne saurez plus vous en passer.
http://www.porquerolles-plongee.com/default.php?id_compte=7&...
In other words, although you are in the deep water you are still dry because you wear a wetsuit (!! I think that is the right word)
Well, I thought it was worth suggesting and Les Porquerolles (or the porkyrolls as my children used to call them..dear, dear me how could they hope to speak French properly?!) are beautiful .Tony-Dusty -you should visit them!
