French to English translations [PRO] Sports / Fitness / Recreation | | French term or phrase: le football de haut niveau | Bixente Lizarazu says he's concentrated on surfing since he gave this up ("depuis que j’ai arrêté le football de haut niveau").
It can't be that complicated, but is this the same as "pro football"? Or is there some legalistic nuance, meaning he can still play for money, but not in major league competitions? Or am I just overlooking something more obvious? ("High level football" sounds phoney to me, but it's not my "rayon".) |

| | top-flight football | Explanation: You can also say "top-level football" and "football at the highest level".
Professional football doesn't really cover it. You can still be a professional player but not necessarily play at the highest level. Lizarazu used to play for Bayern Munich and France, which was top level.

| Grading comment Well, I think the "ayes" have it. Top-level or top-flight will do the trick. (They're definitely UK though; Hugo's answer sounds more US). Thanks all! 4 KudoZ points were awarded for this answer |
