agree  Michael GREEN: But I think you might add, "a long leg on the port tack", since that is what the phrase says...

  -> Thank you Michael. Yes but all this depends on the type of boat and event. It could mean a few minutes or several hours.
agree  xxxJane Elliott: I agree with Michael, probably a long tack on an ocean voyage and they are setting up their accommodation. Strange that they should then refer to the "left-hand side" should be "tribord", and who likes sleeping on the windward side?
