| | fat shot | Explanation: I'm afraid I have to disagree with James: to "top" the ball is indeed to hit it on the top part with the club, but a "gratte" consists in hitting the ground far before the ball and hence making a poor shot. So you were rght in your first impression: those are two very different bad shots.
I think that the usual English word for this is "fat shot". |

24 mins confidence: peer agreement (net): +1 hit a heavy / fat shot

Hi Philip you were right, "gratte" and "top" are exactly the opposite mistake.
"gratte" means that you hit way before the ball, straight into the ground (horrible feeling).
Fat - Definition of Fat Shot -
Also Known As: Heavy shot, chunk shot, chunking the ball, catching it fat. Examples: The Golf Guide hit a fat shot. He caught it heavy.

Suggestion: " In fairway bunker shots there is danger of topping the ball or hitting it heavy"

| Reference: two different terms
Reference information: Hi
i've played a bit of golf and for me these are two different terms - a top is where you hit the the top of the ball (my speciality!), and the gratte for me would be where you hit the turf before the ball but I can't remember the term in English. There are loads of sites on the web for golf tips and hints so you'll find it no prob.
