Does pilote refer here to car drivers or bike riders? In both cases I suppose the support system of the rally organizers carries their belongings, presumably in a trunk or trunks. For the cars, they'd probably refer to the co-driver/navigator too, and his trunk. And cars would probably have more spares. So I tend to think this refers to bike riders, many of whom will be minimalist, with what is presumably a small trunk containing changes of clothes, their toothbrush, etc. and just a couple of spare wheels.
Drivers / riders in a manufacturer's team undoubtedly have all mod-cons transported for them in vast quantities by their support crew, so would not be pilotes "malles".

Thats what came off the spare bike and it all had to go into a secure box which needed to fit into the STANDARD ISSUE STEEL TRUNK WHICH IS CARRIED AROUND ON THE PLANE FROM BIVOUAC TO BIVOUAC. [ ... ] Maximum weight allowed for the TRUNK is 50kg and the officials do weigh it before allowing it on the plane for the first time, after that you can add to it and nobody checks the weight again.
Thats a good thing as my TRUNK weighs in at 49.8 kg without anything other than the spares in it.
This means that anything else i need in the PLANE TRUNK such as a sleeping bag, extra clothing, towel, wash bag, energy rations will have to be sneaked in later and be carried on one of the assistance vehicles for the first couple of days until we head into Morocco. http://duncansdakar.blogspot.com/
