French term or phrase: Barrage
It seems like it could be something like "exit gate". The rider in a competition may find himself here after a completing a circuit.

Here is the full paragraph:

JUMP OFF

if competitors have tied on points in the first round

ost competitions, riders are allowed to walk the initial course, but not the JUMP-OFF course (usually the same course with missing jumps, e.g., 1, 3, 5, 7, 8 instead of 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9) before competition to plan their ride. Walking the course before the event is a chance for the rider to walk the lines he or she will have to ride, in order to decide how many strides the horse will need to take between each jump and from which angle.

event

Explanation:
or class, usually in show jumping
It seems to be referring either to the event itself, or an individual class. I.e. cool your horse down etc etc after the first round of the event/class, whilst you are waiting to enter the ring again if you made it to the second round or jump off.

It could be "gate".........you wait at the gate to enter a class etc, but it seems to be referring to the entire process of warming up, waiting, cooling down etc.
I think it is class, i.e. if you're at your class, you can shower him after your class, if you're too far from the trailer before your class etc

agree  kashew: Fits (almost) perfectly for me.// i.e. Would it apply equally to dressage where there is no jumping?
