La chasse à la coulée consiste à descendre vers le poisson en l'approchant au maximum avant de tirer. Plus précisément, la véritable coulée commence lorsque le palmage de surface s'arrête et que le chasseur est entraîné au fond grâce à son lestage. Il doit alors "planer" en contrôlant sa descente en utilisant l'écartement et l'orientation de ses palmes et enfin l'inclinaison de son corps.
Cette technique peut être assimilée à la chute libre chez les parachutistes. Ainsi, si au cours de la descente le chasseur souhaite aller vers la droite, il n'a juste qu'à réaliser une rotation de son corps dans cette direction pour voir sa trajectoire déviée.
