The catch phase of a paddle stroke refers to the part of the stroke when the paddle enters the water. During the forward stroke, the catch phase entail placing the paddle in the water as far forward alongside the canoe or kayak as the paddler can. The face of the paddle enters the water perpendicular to the direction of the stroke.

The catch is the start of the stroke, the entry of the blade into the water. The key points are:
• clean entry, as far ahead of the feet as possible, with the blade as verti- cal as possible
• full rotation of the torso, bottom hand shoulder forward
• quick development of power

Personally, I like have a little extra length; after trying the 194, and 197, I feel that I get a better, and quicker catch/contact with the water.

In kayaking, a stroke on each side of the boat counts as one. there are tempo trainers for swimmers that are very helpful in creating a metronome effect, so that you speed up the stroke rate. It means a quicker catch, a quicker release, less emphasis on pull and more on back hand thrust forward. |
