French term or phrase: se départager
Hi. This is a text about an air racing series.

Two pilots have won the same number of previous editions (2) and the text says: "2012 sera l'occasion parfaite pour ces deux as du vol de se départager".

I'd usually translate it as "break the tie", but I've already used the word "tie" in the previous sentence so I'm looking for an alternative to avoid a clumsy repetition.

TIA.

English translation:to settle the score
Explanation:
This may not be quite it, since it doesn't appear that there's a rivalry or feud between the two pilots, but I'll offer it up, just in case there's something in the source text to indicate that there is.

This is the idea. Maybe a bit long, but if you want to avoid using 'tie'.

break the tie

Explanation:
I'd pitch the first sentence on egality and the second on their determination to break it. A trick to mark the contrast, a crescendo.

(I'm guessing at the French original from your English version of the first sentence). For something like :

"A deux victoires chacun, X et Y sont au coude à coude au tableau d'honneur pour cette compétition. 2012 sera l'occasion parfaite pour ces deux as du vol de se départager."

"(Currently lying) on a level pegging for points, 2012 will be an excellent opportunity star flyers X and Y to break the tie".

There are zillions of possible renderings. This is just one. I liked your break the tie and think it works well as the major for 2012!
