Explanation: The expression is uncommon in French, and does not appear to be synonymous with "voiture de securité" or "pace car".
The term appears to be used in rallys rather than "races", and is synonymous with "voiture balai". "Sweeper car" is said particularly of the Paris-Dakar.

A sweeper truck closes the track and thanks to the information given by the race PC, it knows exactly where all the motorcycles and cars are located of they have not yet reached the bivouac.
The truck is perfectly knowledgeable of the terrain and never leaves any one behind him.

Closing the piste
Official "sweeper" vehicles will close the rally route.
In desert regions, where the route may be up to 10 km wide, it is impossible to guarantee that the sweeper vehicle will pass the exact spot where a vehicle has broken down. It is therefore up to the crew to signal their presence with their radio, satellite phone or their on-board survival equipment.
The sweeper vehicles will transport all passengers of broken-down vehicles, but will under no circumstances tow the vehicles in question.
Crew members who refuse to board the sweeper vehicle do so at their own risk, and must sign a discharge that will be presented to them by the officials in charge of closing the piste.
No further recourse may be taken once the refusal form has been signed.
In the event of a mechanical breakdown, the crew must spend one night on the track before using their distress beacon where they not have already been picked up by the sweeper vehicle.
