feared event

"Dreaded" me semble un peu fort. Mais tout dépend du contexte, comme de raison. On peut peut-être rendre «redouté» par une traduction issue du vocabulaire général ?

planned for failure

Without knowing the sentence/paragraph in which the citation appears, this translation might have the meaning you wish to convey - that the event dreaded by program designers has been planned for. I am guessing that the surrounding text talks about failsafes built into the formulae/programs to allow them to function despite the dreaded event.

when/if the worst happens...

I don't know if this can be of some help but it sounds a little more natural perhaps.

the dreaded event

I like "the dreaded event" too. I've also heard this phrase used in insurance commercials. Should you have to turn the phrase, Spraggins suggestion is interesting.
