Thanks for the help. The comments and reference were indeed helpful. I'm still somewhat confused about "voies... sur les pistes", but it probably didn't help my credibility very much that I somehow misspelled "sur" in the quotation!

Think I'll go with "running surfaces" for the "pistes de roulement"... (by the way, it might also have helped if I had specified that the context is indeed metro/shuttle - type transit).
