Thanks everyone and sorry I didn't award kudoz - see explanation above re "uninsulated".
I finally sent off "under the insulation on the gun" with a question mark - if I get an answer from the client, I'll let you know.

Whatever the right term is, I don't think it's "uninsulated gun"(that would imply it is not usually insulated).
I agree, maybe it is corrosion "under the insulation on the gun" (that would be my way of expressing that idea), but I don't see why the gun would be insulated. It makes more sense to me if they found corrosion on the "insulation gun" (canon de calorifuge), for example.
Has anyone come across "d�calorifug�" before ?

I should add that this is a transcript of an interview (that's why I suspect wrong spelling).
However, don't know this equipment, so don't know which solution is the most logical.
I just assume that the speaker would normally identify the "canon", and so say "le canon des calorifuges / de calorifuge" ...
