A very complete answer, thanks. In fact the confusion arose from the unusual spelling in the original French, "which D Fourcot" in the answer following yours on ProZ, points out, is usually "calepinage" (in French).

calpinage

Explanation:
Gendebien is perfectly right and deserves the points, but it should be noted that the French term should be "calepinage" with an "e", adapted from the english term to the French use of a "calepin" (booklet) to note the precise layout of tiles, stones, etc
By the way google gives 132 occurrences of "calepinage" on French web, and only 12 of "calpinage", so French people use the French term, and you already had the English one!
"Calepinage" is in the dictionary "Dictionnaire des termes nouveaux des sciences et techniques" (CILF 1983) and "Dictionnaire des industries" (CILF 1986); CILF = Conseil International de la Langue Française
