This is just a preliminary suggestion. I'm going to have to look into this one further.

A "chemin de halage" is a towpath, the sort of path which is typically found on either side of a canal and along which horses used to walk as they towed barges. Odd as it may seem, this may be appropriate in your context. Founderies, iron and steel works were often situated close to canals which came in pretty handy for transporting heavy loads.

What is bugging me here is "contre" halaga...
