French term or phrase: avaloir
"avaloirs" seem to be used specifically in an agricultural context, and seem to resemble irrigation cannals; they are used on farmed land near bodies of water and their function is (exclusively?) to prevent soil erosion, especially with a view to preventing or reducing the discharge of contaminants into the waterways.

Generally speaking, the term "avaloir" is used to describe a gully hole, the head of a drain pipe, or even a fish-trap or fish-weir. But according to the Gestion Technologie Agricole web site, below (which has a great color photo of one), avaloirs are perforated devices that are installed vertically in drainage ditches to catch soil in suspension in the water and so prevent erosion. ("Erosion trap" is one of those elliptical English phrases, like "fire protection," that seem to say the opposite of what they mean.) -- HTH, HC

In the interim, before receiving your reply, I did find one translation of "avaloir" from the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs Web site - "riser pipe" (for "avaloir surélevé") - in a document published in both languages and having a rather schematic drawing of the overall setup (http://www.gov.on.ca/OMAFRA/english/engineer/facts/89-167.htm). In the present context, I much prefer "erosion traps," as it is more descriptive.

Flush and disinfect floor drains and sump pits using
undiluted chlorine bleach, and scrub them to remove greasy
dirt and grime. Clean footing drains outside the foundation if
necessary.
