French to English translations [PRO]
Tech/Engineering - Telecom(munications) | | French term or phrase: découpe | The text involves mobile TVs and I'm not certain about the correct translation in English of this word in the extract below. Outage?Cut-out? Clipping? Or something else? Your help greatly appreciated.

Paul, I know what OFDM is, and on that basis, I think I can guess what 'découpe temporelle' is -- but unfortunately, I'm not up on the correct English term for it (hence the " "), so you may have to do a bit more research.
I believe it means chopping the signal up into chunks in the time domain; this is as distinct from OFDM (= orthogonal frequency-domain modulation), where the signal is chopped up in the frequency domain.

Fair enough, Paul, I can't argue with that; one word of caution though: 'découpe' fundamentally means 'cutting up into little bits' (i.e. chopping), whereas 'clipping' is usually more related to words like 'étêter / écimer' etc.
However, I guess if you consider 'découper' as 'cutting out', then that could bring it closer to the idea of 'clipping' (round the edges of sthg) -- as used e.g. for lace (where it is exactly that translation) |

| Grading comment Thanks, Dusty, but I've gone for "temporal clipping" as there are at least one or two google hits for this with either OFDM or DVB, but it's difficult to be 100% certain.
