Les couches formant le cristal photonique de la membrane sont structurés dans leurs épaisseurs. En l’espèce, la couche est structurée suivant un maillage périodique à deux dimensions, comprenant un ensemble d’éléments de structuration.

Explanation:
Periodicity can be spatial as well as temporal. The links in a chain, for example, are periodic, as is a crystal lattice.

A chain is, of course, periodic in 1 dimension, a crossword is periodic in 2, while a crystal lattice is generally periodic in 3. As for higher dimensions, let's not go there....

agree  rkillings: And why not 'periodic lattice'? Both words, mesh and lattice, derive from 2D patterns (mesh emphasising the interstices, lattice emphasising the laths).
