French term or phrase: Propre
Hello,

Un but de la présente invention est de contrôler les interactions entre les deux modes propres de résonance optique générés et de contrôler de manière continue leurs fréquences propres F1 et F2

My translation :

A purpose of the present invention is to control the interactions between the two proper generated modes of optical resonance and to continually control their proper frequencies F1 and F2.

is "proper" ok here?
Thank you

eigen
Explanation:
In scientific & mathematical contexts, "propre" invariably means "eigen". OK, I know it's German, and occasionally you do come across "proper", but generally they are eigenfrequencies, eigenvectors, eigenmodes, etc etc.

Sometimes also called "characteristic" modes, frequencies, etc. For French refs. see (for example) http://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Résonance#Modes_propres

agree  writeaway: I never knew that English used the German 'eigen' like this. Interesting (not that I'll ever be caught with a techy doc).

-> My doc is often a bit tetchy too... I think the eigen dates back to the golden days of the 19th C German pathfinders in mathematics and physics

agree  rkillings: Always an unhyphenated prefix to the word, never separated from it -- as Chris illustrates but does not state explicitly./ The usage dates from a century earlier: Leonhard Euler in 1743.
