Vegetable-tanned leather is tanned using tannin and other ingredients found in vegetable matter, tree bark, and other such sources. It is supple and brown in color, with the exact shade depending on the mix of chemicals and the color of the skin. It is the only form of leather suitable for use in leather carving or stamping. Vegetable-tanned leather is not stable in water; it tends to discolor, and if left to soak and then dry it will shrink and become less supple and harder. In hot water, it will shrink drastically and partly gelatinize, becoming rigid and eventually brittle. Boiled leather is an example of this where the leather has been hardened by being immersed in hot water, or in boiled wax or similar substances. Historically, it was occasionally used as armor after hardening, and it has also been used for book binding.

VEGETABLE-TANNED LEATHER is tanned using tree bark and various other plants. It comes in various thicknesses and colors. Characterized by its firmness, strength and lack of elasticity, vegetable-tanned leather is used for a variety of purposes, including crafts (e.g., leather carving, leather stamping, etc.), belts, saddles, harnesses, holsters, shoe soles and some luggage.

Sorry, just saw this is in the discussion box which I didn't consult before posting. I work a lot for a major French "maroquinier" and knew the answer instantly and, as you seemed to be going off-track with vegan leather, posted right away!
Ann, you found the same as me! I think I'm going to go for 'vegetable-tanned leather'. I don't think it means vegan leather. Anyway... since the sandals also have REAL patent leather straps, a vegan wouldn't want to buy them!
This is my first Kudoz question... not sure what to do next... how do I choose this option and award points?

I think this confirms vegetable-dyed leather.
Not much context, but here it is:
Les sandales compensées. Brides croisées en cuir végétal et cuir
vernis.
It's not patent leather, as that's 'cuir vernis'.
Hmmm... I thought this too but when I googled it I found info about the tanning process using natural products, but suggesting it's still 'real' leather.

The updates to the menu were made to make the site easy and more intuitive for visitors. Obviously, like any change, this may take a few days to get used to.
The dropdown menus have been divided into two-dimensional panels with similar items grouped together under headings. This eliminates scrolling for those with smaller screens, and also improves readability.
Mouseover your name at the top of the screen. Here you will find information about your account, your email settings, and more. The "My ProZ.com" menu was moved up here to simplify the main navigation, and to keep all of this type of information together.
