I have a similar reaction to Tony's. My mother used to try to get me to wear them - unsuccessfully once I passed the age of about 10.

If so, you may be able to keep some reference to that; but if not, I'd advise you to get well away from the metaphor, at risk of its falling flat on EN ears!

I must admit, any mention of 'twin-set' always conjures up an image of my Mum in the '60s with her all-too-lustrous turquoise polyester one of which she was so proud!
