French to English translations [PRO] Textiles / Clothing / Fashion / Luxury clothing - Chanel Jacket
French term or phrase:galons en maille
I am translating a text about the construction of the iconic Chanel tweed jacket. This sentence refers to the braiding:
I have translated "des galons en gros grain" as "petersham braid" as per my client's glossary. I don't know how to translate "des galons en maille".
@ SJLD "maille" I think is more like the loops of a chain (but I could be wrong!) whereas "tressé" is plaited/braided. I hadn't seen that book before; looks good. Isn't terminology just so interesting? (and time-consuming when researching le mot juste)
@ Petitavoine
dit 200 Braids to Twist, Knot, Loop or Weave, alors je verrais bien twist=torsadé, macramé=knot, tissé=woven, tressé=braid/plait.
I wonder though what is the difference between galon en maille and galon tressé.

This amazing woman made "galons" for Chanel using techniques entriely her own. Apparently none of the trainees the fashion house sent over the years were able to learn them adequately. She used an intricate mix of twisting and weaving. But even "Monsieur Karl" had to wait unti she'd finished haymaking!

The knitted braid, or "Baltic" braid is an embellishment that looks like you have braided some yarn and glued or stitched it along the surface of your knitting. It is done with a single color, or two colors. The braid looks best if it has a few rows of a background color worked in plain knitting before starting the braid and after finishing it. The braid can be used along the bottom or top of a sweater, hat, or socks.

Explanation: a combination of previous two answers. The "galons" =trim and "en maille" means it's like a chain or linked chain. However, linked chain or chain braid doesn't google well for images whereas "braided trim" shows exactly the type of trims used by Chanel

it could even be a GIMP Trim (see pic in 1st link). Hard to say for sure without pic as Chanel used/uses a lot of different braided trims

regarding discussion entries re (French) "gimp braid trim" it is difficult to find it used in relation to Chanel ( I found a couple of blogs as below but nothing more "official") I think it can be used for clothing as well, though it seems to be used more frequently for home décor as Petitavoine says. However, gimp is a stronger/strenghtened trim, usually with a wire or other form of strenghtener running through it so I think the original answer of "Braided trim" is the safest here as there are many ghits for this associated with Chanel.
