agree  Laurel Clausen: I think it comes from "thongs" - what I called flip-flops growing up in the US... until a thong came to mean something else!

agree  Hal D'Arpini: I grew up in the U.S. calling them thongs, but more recently learned flip-flops, as Lauren says. It all depends where you grew up, I guess. It may still be in use where I grew up, or everyone may have adopted "flip-flops."

thongs

Explanation:

Another possibility. Whether you use "thongs" or "flip-flops" depends on what you used when you were growing up. For me, it was "thongs," and it was only when I was an adult that I learned the word "flip-flops."

Admittedly, using "thongs" on a list of swim products might cause some confusion between the footwear and the style of swimwear, so perhaps "flip-flop" is the better choice. After all, when it comes to swim products, no one is going to confuse flip-flop the footwear with flip-flop the characterization of the recent anti-contraception position taken by several Republican politicians in the U.S.
