French term or phrase: village neige
Would really appreciate ideas as to how this should be translated. Personally, am not a big winter holidays person, always head for warmer climes and am not used to the concept of a 'snow resort' although I see it gets lots of google hits...but remain unconvinced. Interestingly though, the French 'village neige' doesn't seem to be that common a term either. It seems that they are trying to get away from the concept of 'ski resort' as there really seems to be an emphasis on all the activities, including skiing obviously, that you can enjoy there. But the hotels are in well-known ski destinations (e.g. Valmorel). So I just wanted to see what others think about "snow resort" and whether there were any other suggestions.
TIA.

snow resort

Explanation:
I would personally go with "snow resort". I like the term and think it works in English. If the source text is, as you suggest, aiming outside the box, why not do the same in the target text? "Village neige" conjures up a family environment with alpine & cross-country skiing, boarding, tubing or just playing in the snow...

" it´s a real or regular snow village "refers above all to a place which in winter is never short of snow, as opposed to other villages or resorts where there is often too little snow for skiing and other winter sports.

-> still, you must have been on a different track. a typical snow village for me is a place with "snow guarantee in winter" as opposed to other resorts where snow often is artifical.

neutral  gallagy2: tried googling this hours ago and like Phil, came upon page after page of ornaments!

winter resort

Explanation:
This could just be a way of describing a resort that has snow, so 'winter resort' could be a way of including all the winter sports.

Or, just winter activities in general? Do people go on holiday to snowy places without sport in mind? I'm not sure.

As opposed to summer resort... one example.

neutral  B D Finch: That could mean somewhere warm and sunny, where one goes to escape the snow.// if I live in England and to take my summer holidays in Australia, I am in Australia during the Australian winter.

-> An interesting point, I guess I understand 'winter' or 'summer' to refer to the resort's climate rather than the season in which one would go there!

Reference: Club Med

Reference information:
I can't help but feel that this term may refer to, or is at least influenced by, the Club med "village" concept, where the resorts are referred to as "villages", sometimes even in English.

Their own EN-language material refers to "ski resorts" and "winter sports".

WHATEVER YOUR AGE, THERE’S A SPECIAL WINTER WONDERLAND WAITING FOR EVERYONE AT CLUB MED’S VILLAGES IN THE ALPS
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/travel/728379/Club-Med-Ski-Guide-...

I first started working for Club Med on a recommendation from a friend. When he showed me the GO video from that winter (1997) in Copper, I was hooked. I’ve worked for Club Med now for 14 seasons. 11 of those have been at winter villages, though recently I started working during the summer as well. I am working on becoming a Chief of Service because I really believe in the program and hope to have a bright future with Club Med.

I therefore think that "winter resort", "winter sports resort" and "ski resort" would all work.
