This is from a European French document regarding a leasehold property. I understand that the departmental regions classify hotels and vacation rentals according to a “star” system, but I’m not sure if there is an exact, agreed upon, English translation for “classement préfectoral”. Here is the sentence:

Ces biens immobiliers font partie d’une Résidence de Tourism destine à failre l’obje d’une demande de ** classement préfectoral ** conformément aux dispositions de l’article L 321-1 du code du tourisme

I think you need to go with a functional translation here - I very much doubt whether there is a "standard" term in English

Explanation:
Since a"préfecture" is a governmental representative, I think "official" would be an adequate English translation here. As to "classement", I would suggest the standard phrase used by the UNESCO for its World Heritage sites, which are "listed", not "classified".

neutral  Tony M: I think there's a danger of using 'listing' here, since it sort of implies that there is a list from which you can choose your accommodation; and while I'm sure the Tourist Office has one, I'm not sure you could go to the Prefecture for the same thing!

It's the best you could probably do in English. Perhaps use the French and then give the translation in parentheses.

I would say that "classement" is "rating" here and that "préfectoral" would just be "prefectoral"

Le classement n'est pas obligatoire, mais, sous réserve de modification, en 2011 les revenus locatifs des meublés de tourisme classés[3] peuvent bénéficier d'une exonération d'impôts sur les Bénéfices industriels et commerciaux (« BIC ») de 50%.

Le classement préfectoral « meublé de tourisme » allant de 1 à 5 étoiles, est un label de qualité délivré par la préfecture du département en fonction des critères de confort et d’habitabilité tels qu'ils sont définis par l'arrêté ministériel du 28 décembre 1976 modifié notamment par l'arrêté du 8 janvier 1993 et celui du 1er avril 1997, relatif au classement des meublés de tourisme :

* 1 étoile : hébergement simple mais convenable
* 2 étoiles : hébergement de bon confort
* 3 étoiles : hébergement de très bon confort
* 4 étoiles : hébergement de très bon confort, de grande qualité
* 5 étoiles : hébergement de très haut standing. Cadre luxueux

Pour obtenir le classement meublé de tourisme, le propriétaire utilise le téléservice de classement de la préfecture, ou remplit un état descriptif de son logement à l'aide du formulaire Cerfa n°11819*02 et l'adresse à la préfecture du lieu où est situé le meublé, en précisant la catégorie de classement qu'il demande. L’arrêté de classement est valable pendant cinq ans.
